Our Purpose
The mission of the Northwest Florida/ Big
Bend Health Councils is to:
- Provide effective health planning for the area;
- Promote development of health services, a supply of
health professionals, and facilities which meet
identified community health needs in a cost effective
manner;
- Increase public knowledge and individual awareness of
health issues and available resources;
- Assist individuals and communities in maintaining and
improving health
What do the councils do?
By law, each local health planning council does the following:
- Develop a district health plan which adapts the goals, objectives and strategies of the
state health plan to the unique needs of the local communities;
- Promote public awareness of community health needs, emphasizing health promotion
and cost effective service selection;
- Collect data and conduct analyses and studies on the health needs of the district;
- Assist the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) with specific elements of the
Certificate of Need process;
- Advise and assist regional and local comprehensive planning agencies in addressing
community health needs;
- Assist county officials in implementing the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and
Partnerships (MAPP) strategic planning process in the district;
- Assist in planning activities relative to the delivery of services for persons with, or at risk, of
HIV/AIDS
- Evaluate the cost and effectiveness of services designed to meet the needs of the
medically indigent;
- Provide technical assistance to encourage and support activities of providers, purchasers
and consumers as well as local, regional and state agencies in meeting health goals,
objectives and policies of the district health plan
